The drawing retells the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice as an allegory for modern Appalachia. The fiddle player mourns the loss of his beloved to the forces of environmental degradation and public health epidemics brought on by corporate greed and governmental indifference. Inspired by long afternoons in secluded hollows, vistas from ancient peaks, and the musicians and artists fighting for the soul of the region, the piece is ultimately hopeful for the redemption of Appalachia’s unique cultural and natural bounties.
