UPSTAIRS: "Liminal Alchemy" Art Show Opening Reception
"Liminal Alchemy" features three artists exploring the transitional and artificial nature of surface and identity. They use a variety of different media to address concepts of self, materiality, gender, abstraction, expectation, and obsession.
Michael-Birch Pierce is a fiber artist using the language of high fashion embellishment to study the self we choose to share and the authenticity of interaction. Using rhinestones, sequins, fur, mirrors and ornate frames, he recontextualizes portraiture by blurring the lines between subject and viewer, flesh and fantasy.
Mixed-media artist Tamara Cervenka utilizes myth and symbolism to investigate societal norms, womanhood, control, and survival. Her collages and sculptures combine disparate and fractured parts to highlight the dichotomy of what's expected and what's desired.
Jane Winfield's playfully frustrated abstract paintings draw inspiration from perceptual incongruities and spatial phenomena. Chunky, built-up surfaces and layers of luminous color communicate a choreographed argument between unsightliness and allure, chaos and control.
