Gallery5 is now accepting proposals and visual submissions for "Momento Mori", an exhibition that considers death and ephemerality in the modern era. The work assembled in this all media show will look at how artists are confronting these issues today and consider impermanence in contemporary culture. Memento Mori will run from October 29th until Dec 17th 2010 and will coincide with an observance of Dia de Los Muertos (info about the festival below). Both two-dimensional and 3-dimensional works are welcome. Gallery5 should receive all submissions and proposals no later than September 17th. All digital images should be a maximum of 10”x10” at 72 dpi. Please attach a numbered index of your work that includes title, dimensions, and medium. Bio, statement, resume, and relevant links may also be included in your submission.
About "Dia de Los Muertos" at Gallery5:
Gallery5's observance of Dia de Los Muertos will be a multicultural experience that integrates traditional practices with events relevant to the immediate community. Today, the holiday exists as a fusion of Aztec rites from the Pre-Hispanic era, Roman Catholic beliefs, and modern secular interpretations that vary from city to city across Latin America and in many locations around the world. These festivities celebrate death as a continuation of life. For the month of November 2010, Gallery5 will design an event series that commemorates these traditions. Through observance, our organization hopes to encourage participation by a wider range of demographics, and to challenge common paradigms concerning the taboos associated with death. The event will incorporate a two month long visual art exhibition and contain several days of festivities that include an opening reception, a free public lecture, a dinner theater, and an all-day series of public workshops and educational opportunities.
Visual works concerning ephemerality, renewal, and death as metaphor will be assembled in Gallery5’s Main Gallery. To encourage community involvement, in the Lucent Pheonix Community Gallery, Gallery5 will be constructing a large public altar in honor of Richmonder's who have passed. Local organizations and audience members alike will be invited to bring their own ofrendas, or offerings to celebrate the lives of those no longer with us. Additionally, the Gallowlilly's Gallery will address the history of Dia De Los Muertos.
